Personality

Kotarou is determined, stubborn, competitive, hotheaded, and seems to LIVE for combat and testing his personal strength. He's astonishingly observant when it comes to fighting, able to categorize distance, strength and range quite easily. He's a tactical thinker, and though he can be prone to charging in, he nearly always has a plan and it's tough to get him riled up, even if there's a hostage at stake. He seems to have literally no fear, and will without a second thought put himself in danger to help out someone who has his respect or caring. He thinks in terms of fights, not enemies. He never hesitates to throw out advice and doesn't grudge compliments when they're earned, but he's just as quick to take people down a peg. He's "charmingly honest" and never sugarcoats things. Although he's not "book-smart" he's often street-smart and tends to catch onto things faster than Negi does.

At one point, Kotarou gives Negi what he feels isn't valid advice, to the point where he doesn't even remember giving it later on. ("You're not stupid enough".) He encourages Negi to simplify things and to stop overthinking.

Kotarou has very little patience for weakness or "whining" or feeling sorry for oneself, and he frequently serves as the voice of reason for Negi when he's getting too down on himself, and always tends to fire him up. He has very chivalrous views regarding women; he's nearly always polite and kind to them, and sees them as something to be protected and cared for. He isn't comfortable with the idea of women on a battlefield, but it's not something he makes a huge fuss over. He frequently taunts Negi about "having girls fight for him" though. It's a character point that he often calls girls, even those he's just met, "one-san" and if he gets closer to them, "ne-chan". Often he'll prefix this with a name, although some get fond nicknames, like Yue, who he calls "short stuff" in reference to her height. (He'll often try to argue with her, but she's a bit too smart for him.) Although Negi calls him "Kotarou-kun", Kotarou doesn't add anything special to Negi's name. They act as equals, best friends and rivals.

Kotarou's brash and can be loud and vulgar, and his sense of humor can be a little perverse at times (like commenting on the color of Nodoka's panties, one of his first lines in the manga). However, he tends to reign it in around others, especially girls he likes or respects (though others might have to deal with his mouth if they're close enough, like Negi).

He tends to give as good as he gets, and can be downright sweet depending on how he's treated. But disrespect him or treat him like a child, and he'll treat you just as badly right back.

There are times when Kotarou's youth and insecurity can show, like when he was beaten easily in the Mahora Academy Tournament. His confidence was badly shaken, and he had a bit of trouble getting it back. So although he's very rough and tumble, he has his vulnerabilities, too.

History

It can be very easily surmised that Kotarou had a rather rough childhood growing up. He's Negi's age (eleven or twelve, going by calculated Resort time) this is only referenced twice, once when he mentioned taking jobs as a mercenary "to keep eatin'", and once more when he's surrounded by the banter of Chizuru, Natsumi and Ayaka at the dinner table, he gets rather quiet, happy and thoughtful, and when asked, remarks that he's never really sat down and had a meal at a table, and it was a little like having a family.

Being a hanyou (part inugami, or dog-spirit and part human) he would have not been well-accepted by either race, and forced to carve out his own path, making his way from job to job and following whatever tests his strength. Our only clues to his events that might have happened in his past are his chivalrous attitude towards women, and his hatred of western wizards (though Negi is the exception to the rule).

When Kotarou first enters the story he's employed by Chigusa to attempt to stop Negi from delivering a letter to the Kansai Magic Association. It's unclear but implied that he's completely willing to kill both Negi and Asuna, and he scopes out Negi's abilities beforehand by challenging his strategy (and proceeding to beat him) in a video game involving magic. He was able to break Negi's magical barrier, but Negi surprised him by strengthening himself with his own magic to land a successful hit and badly hurt Kotarou with electrical shocks. When Kotarou brought his full strength to bear (appearing in a more bestial form of something like a werewolf, but still with a mostly human face and torso) he was on the verge of beating Negi. With some unexpected help from Nodoka and her artifact, they were able to beat him. Kotarou was impressed, and despite failing his mission, thought only of a rematch. Though he was trapped for a time inside a charm while the others broke free, he reappeared that night for a rematch while Negi and the others rushed to save Konoka from a magical ritual. He was soundly beaten by Kaede, who realized that although Kotarou acknowledged her as stronger than Negi, still didn't bring his full strength to bear and allowed himself to lose.

After the Kyoto arc he was placed under the custody of the Kansai Magic Association and had several of his more powerful techniques bound. (Namely, his ability to summon dog spirits and shift into his more powerful form). He escaped to go find Negi for their rematch, seeing him as a rival, and once he reached Mahora ran afoul of the Slime Sisters and their plan to attack Negi. He risked himself to sneak in and steal the bottle Graf Hermann was summoned from, and to warn Negi. He was badly hurt and had his memory wiped by Graf, where he shifted into a small, black-and-white dog and wandered wounded in the rain until he collapsed in the street, where Chizuru and Natsumi found him. They brought him home, but he unintentionally shifted back. Sensing threat and not entirely conscious, Kotarou grabbed Natsumi and held his claws to her throat while he demanded clothes, food, and to know where he was. However, he was unable to stay upright and collapsed, where Chizuru discovered he had a fever of 104 degrees and resolved to take care of him. Ayaka later returned home to the dorm, getting squarely in the way of Kotarou attempting to run from the threat of being bathed. He headbutted her squarely in the chest, so hard she was nearly knocked unconscious.

Ayaka launched into a tirade about how awful of a mannerless child he was (even after he apologized) and Kotarou passively asked if she was the "old lady who ran the joint". This set up the comical relationship of mutual disrespect and childish yelling between Ayaka and Kotarou, which tends to resemble Asuna's relationship with her. Chizuru, recognizing a kid in need of help, instantly fibbed and introduced Kotarou as "Kotarou Murakami", Natsumi's younger brother.

Graf Hermann tracked Kotarou to the dorm and beat him nearly into unconsciousness, though he didn't find the bottle on the boy's person. Chizuru bravely slapped him for hurt Kotarou, and he promptly took her hostage, to go along with several other girls the Slime Sisters had been working on kidnapping to lure Negi out. Negi arrived and jogged Kotarou's memories. Kotarou produced the bottle, and told him that their rematch could wait, that he'd help him in this fight first. After all, he owed Chizuru for saving him.

With Kotarou's help, they beat and re-sealed Graf Hermann and rescued the girls. For his work, Kotarou had his powers fully restored, and Kotarou entered the Mahora elementary school to stay near the others. He continues to room with Chizuru, Natsumi, and Ayaka under his false identity, hiding his ears and tail.

He's embarrassed by Chizuru's hugging him in public and constantly treating him like a child, and it's suggested he might have a crush on her, though it's really unknown whether he does or not. He becomes rather overprotective of Natsumi, however, and slowly comes to learn more about girls through spending time with the rest of the class, and struck up a strong friendship and rivalry with Negi.

Kotarou was soundly beaten in the second round of the Mahora Tournament, though he very easily beat Sakura Mei (and assisted her rather chivalrously when she fell into the water during the fight). Albireo deeply shook up Kotarou's confidence in his own fighting abilities, and made him wonder if Negi would take him seriously anymore. Kaede found, talked him through it, and offered to train him, though it's still unclear which of them is the stronger because Kotarou refuses to bring his full strength to bear against women.

Kotarou disappeared during Chao's plot, and it's assumed he went into hiding to avoid persecution. However, he reappeared to help Negi fight Chao. He was also brought into Evangeline's resort as a sparring partner, and went along with Negi to help Asuna through her trials in the cold, barren wastelands.

Kotarou also came along with Negi into the magical world, and after the attack by Fate and when they were all split up and marked as wanted felons, Kotarou and Negi teamed up to become paid fighters in tournaments -- to use the prize money to buy Natsumi, Ako and Akira back from slavery in the magical world. They took red Aging Pills to assume their teenage forms to do this.

Kotarou is taken to Adstringendum just as he walks through the gateway of the area, into his first fight, Negi at his side.
